Who is Kara Dioguardi?

As far as I know she is a singer, though is only famous in America.
She is most well known for being on recent series of American Idol having taken over from Paula Abdul.
I don't know if anyone had heard of her before that but in the UK at least was a total unknown that no-one had heard of until she became a judge on American Idol which is shown on ITV2 I think in the UK but not mainstream so no-one really sees it over here either.
